Monster (2003)
So for my first blog post for the SLC I wanted to talk about the movie “Monster.” The movie “Monster” is directed by Patty Jenkins and based on the true story of Aileen Wuornos. Aileen was a prostitute in Daytona Beach, Florida who was just doing what she needed to do to survive when a series of events led her to become a serial killer. The lead role in the movie was played by Charlize Theron, who is shown in the photo above, and it is amazing how much you cannot recognize her. She had to gain forty pounds for the role and put on prosthetics and false teeth to achieve the image of Aileen. This movie left me speechless and almost in tears at the end of the movie because it was so powerful. This woman really lived a tragic life and you can’t help but feel sorry for her even though she is a murder. The performance that Charlize Theron put in this film earned her an Oscar and I can definitely say she deserved it. When an actress is able to play a role and make you feel sorry for a serial killer then I think it is safe to say it was a job well done. This movie had one of the most convincing performances I have ever seen in my life. The movie shows true and intense stories of Aileen like her being abused as a child and beginning to sell herself for money since she was fourteen. Just that statement alone is enough to move someone. Most people could never imagine being on their own at that age, let alone being a prostitute. The unbelievable story of this woman and the performances by Christina Ricci and Charlize Theron are what really makes this film remarkable. Highly recommended but not for the faint of heart because it is really depressing. You should probably plan a trip to Disney after watching this movie because you’re going to need a large boost of happiness.
